Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Westmont, CA
We provide independent DuraFlex service in Morningside Park and across Westmont ZIP 90044, and the one thing that separates our work here is that we expect original 1930s brick flues with no liner on most calls. That changes how we approach DuraFlex cleaning, inspection, and cap work. If you’ve got a DuraFlex liner or cap on a chimney in Westmont and you can’t remember the last time it was swept, call (866) 632-1088 for a free estimate. Rob Calloway runs our shop, and the flues in Westmont are the kind he knows best.
Why Westmont Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
DuraFlex liners and caps show up on a lot of Westmont chimneys because they’re a common retrofit when an original clay tile flue finally gives out. We’ve worked on enough of them to know the difference between a liner that’s still sound and one that’s sagging off its top plate. Our DuraFlex sales & service work doesn’t come with a manufacturer’s badge. We’re an independent shop, and that matters because we’ll tell you when a DuraFlex component can be repaired versus when the real problem is the masonry around it.
Rob grew up in the Hollywood Riviera section of Redondo Beach and went through the HVAC and sheet metal programs at El Camino College in Torrance before he crossed over into chimney work. He’s been cleaning and repairing flues on South Bay and South LA homes for going on eighteen years. That hands-on background is why Westmont homeowners call us when they want a straight answer about their DuraFlex system, not a sales pitch. If you can’t see daylight up the flue and you can’t remember the last time it was cleaned, that’s where we start.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Westmont
- Liner top plates loosening at the crown. Westmont’s dry sun bakes the mortar crowns on original masonry chimneys until they spall and crack. A DuraFlex top plate that’s anchored to a failing crown will work loose within a few seasons, letting water slip down around the liner. We fix the crown before we reseat the plate, so the repair actually holds.
- Cap screens clogged with creosote and leaf litter. The mild South LA climate means Westmont fireplaces get lit lightly but persistently on cool winter nights. Creosote accumulates slowly and quietly, and by the time you notice the draft is weak, the cap screen is often half-choked. On the tight lots in 90044, overhanging trees add leaf debris to the problem faster than most homeowners expect.
- Unlined 1930s brick flues with a DuraFlex liner that was never properly sized. We find liners that sag or crimp where they meet the damper frame, usually because someone dropped a flexible liner into an old flue without checking the measurements. Cleaning around a poorly supported liner takes care and the right tools, otherwise you’re just pushing creosote into the gaps.
- Rusted cap assemblies on narrow-lot rooflines. Westmont’s bungalow blocks put some chimneys up against neighboring rooflines, shading parts of the cap while sun scorches the rest. Moisture and temperature swings do a number on cap screens and mesh. We’ve pulled caps off Westmont roofs that were rusted solid.
- Insulation wrap degrading from water intrusion. When a cracked crown lets water run down the outside of an insulated DuraFlex liner, the wrap soaks it up like a sponge. It holds moisture against the stainless, accelerates corrosion, and shortens the liner’s life. Replacing the wrap without addressing the crown is throwing money away, so we don’t do it that way.
DuraFlex Service in Westmont: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Westmont is a small unincorporated pocket of South Los Angeles where most single-family homes date to the 1920s through 1950s, built with brick or masonry fireplaces that have rarely been swept. This isn’t a neighborhood of new construction with modern gas inserts. We’re dealing almost entirely with decades-old, heavily used fireplaces in dense, tightly packed lots.
The tight 90044 lots shape every part of our DuraFlex work here. Rooftop access is often obstructed by neighboring rooflines and overgrown trees, which means our technicians frequently set up ladders from narrow side yards rather than open driveways. On a recent Westmont job, our tech laddered up a side-yard access to a 1930s brick flue where a DuraFlex cap had rusted solid and the crown was spalling from years of dry sun. We pulled the seized cap, swept out the slow-built creosote, and reset the liner top plate onto a repaired crown, restoring draft and stopping the water intrusion that had been degrading the wrap. That kind of access work is what separates a Westmont Watts DuraFlex service call or one here from a wide-lot city a few miles away. It’s also why we quote our work after looking at the actual roofline, not from a satellite photo.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Westmont
We work on the DuraFlex product lines most common in South LA retrofit work: the Pro stainless flexible liner kits, ProFit and standard chimney cap lines, insulated flexible liner systems, and multi-flue and custom cap assemblies. When a Westmont chimney needs a liner termination, top plate, or cap where fit and code compliance matter, we use genuine DuraFlex components. For non-critical hardware like clamps and screens, we’ll use quality aftermarket parts if they do the job just as well. It’s a practical approach, not a brand loyalty exercise. We keep common DuraFlex termination parts and cap hardware stocked so a typical Westmont service call doesn’t sit waiting on a shipment.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Westmont
No, not safely. An unlined brick flue can’t be cleaned the way a lined chimney can because the mortar joints won’t handle the brush pressure, and worse, creosote gets embedded in the old mortar where it can’t be removed. You need a liner installed first. We can do that with a properly sized DuraFlex flexible liner and get it in place before the next time you light a fire. Call (866) 632-1088 and we’ll scope it out and show you what’s actually in there.
Rusted caps on Westmont roofs almost always trace back to two things: a cracked crown letting water pool around the cap base, and the specific sun and shade pattern your roofline creates on a tight 90044 lot. A shaded cap stays damp after rain or fog. A sun-baked one expands and contracts at a different rate than its fasteners. If the crown underneath is spalling, no replacement cap will last. We repair the crown, then replace the cap on a solid base.
For a lightly used fireplace with a known history and no recent changes, a Level 1 inspection is usually adequate. But on Westmont’s original 1920s and 1930s fireplaces, “lightly used” for a few decades still leaves creosote and water damage that a Level 1 won’t fully surface. If a chimney hasn’t been looked at in five years or more, we recommend at least a camera inspection down the flue. You’ll see the footage yourself.
Usually, yes. We ladder from side yards when there’s no open driveway, and we’ve worked around rooflines that sit only a few feet from the property line. Overgrown trees sometimes need a branch trimmed back before we can safely reach the cap. If we can’t physically do it safely, we’ll tell you that plainly and explain what needs to change. Our Westmont service area work has taught us to expect tight access.
Yes. A DuraFlex insert isn’t the same as an open fireplace. The liner is running hot with every burn, and its connections at the top plate and appliance collar need checking more often. Creosote accumulations happen in different spots because the draft is different. We clean insert liners with insert-specific brushes and verify the liner isn’t sagging or crimping at the damper frame. If we find a problem, we tell you and walk through the fix.
